New Meadowlands Stadium
Opened in 2010, the 1.6 billion dollar stadium is home to the New York Jets and the New York Giants. Shared and owned jointly, the new stadium is state of the art. The first football game ever played in the new stadium was a Giants victory over the Carolina Panthers. The following night, the Jets opened their season on Monday Night Football with a 10-9 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
In 2011 the Jets season opener was on the tenth anniversary of 9-11 and as the feature game for Sunday Night Football the New York Jets had an emotional, action packed comeback in the 4th quarter victory over the Dallas Cowboys 27-24. The New Meadowlands Stadium will host Super Bowl XLVIII.
New York Jets used to play in Giants Stadium
Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ was the home of the New York Jets. The New York Jets moved to Giants Stadium in 1984 after leaving Shea Stadium in Queens, NY. As the name implies, Giants Stadium was also the home to the NY Giants. Giants Stadium hosts many sold out concerts and high profile sporting events every year.
When the New York Jets first moved into Giants Stadium it took awhile for attendance to reach capacity level because season ticket holders were living in New York City and didn’t commute to New Jersey. However, after a few seasons the New York Jets developed a committed fan base that lived closer to the stadium and now the Jets regularly play their games in front of sell out crowds.
Giant Stadium gave way to a new stadium that was built in 2009 and opened in 2010. Like Giants Stadium the new stadium will also be shared by the Jets and Giants. The big difference is that the new stadium will have all the modern state-of-the-art amenities that will make it one of the best stadiums in the entire National Football League. The 1.6 billion dollar new stadium was the most expensive sports stadium ever built up to that moment.
